Loop House

Stoke Newington, London

Designed in collaboration with sound artist Scanner, this curved, fluted concrete house takes as its starting point Eric Satie’s long looping piano work “Vexations”. The hemmed-in site called for a standalone landmark building, visually detached from the adjacent row of terraces. Influenced by the Satie piece and, as a freestanding building, its form spirals, self-referring, sculptural, among larger buildings and trees.

From the entrance one is led up through the looping stairs, guided by an illuminated balustrade that hugs the outer form to arrive at a top floor living room affording the best light and views. The rooms are cave-like and uncompromisingly modern. Bare ivory concrete and galvanised steel are softened by birch plywood (referencing the concrete formwork used in construction), oak frames, off-whites walls, and pale yellow/mustard accents.
