The design discourse began with a shared appreciation for overlapping architectural styles. It was agreed from the outset to try blending modernist sensibilities with retro elements in a novel way.
The initial idea was to inject retro character in the kitchen through freestanding mid-century style Smeg appliances (in matching red enamel), supported by a contemporary incarnation of vertical plank panelling painted in a complementary pale blue.
Staggered birch ply boards would highlight the dining area, with exposed steel beams and painted brickwork adding an industrial-domestic touch to the mood board. ‘Chunky’ worktops and ceramic Bakelight fittings were proposed in keeping with the design approach. Lastly, the palette was accentuated with contemporary brushed brass details and dark blue pendant lights/soft furnishings.
