Design of a kitchen/dining space for a professional ceramicist, comprising a central dining table enveloped by kitchen work surfaces on three sides. This configuration was inspired by the client’s ceramic workshop, in which a central multi-functional work table was surrounded by kilns, storage, and tools/equipment on the perimeter. Her preferred method of working in the kitchen largely mimicked that in her workshop.
The palette incorporated her ceramic ware, mainly consisting of clear-glazed tiles and pottery, characterised by natural clay tones and raw finish. Other materials were built up around these, to form a look and feel in keeping with this natural/characterful aesthetic – ornate but simple, much like her craft.
Materials include Bakelite ceramic light fittings, geometric encaustic tiles, Everhot range cooker, Buster and Punch toggle switches, warm solid wood kitchen doors from Reform, reclaimed oak parquet flooring, light terrazzo work surfaces, plain patterned fabrics and Little Greene colour accents.
