Glass Seam House

Maida Vale, London

The project’s main focus was to create a legible seam between old and new through a continuous transparent strip that separates the existing Grade II Listed house from the modern three-storey side extension. Frameless glazing and a glass walkway at first floor allow space and light to flood into through this transparent buffer, highlighting the contrast between crisp details and the irregular original flank wall.

The internal circulation is reconfigured to provide greater connection between new and old parts, with open galleries and door-less openings creating a single fluid space on ground and first floor. Compartmented rooms are maintained on the upper floors. Minimal features allow the ornate Victorian elements to continue to dominate where the two meet.
