Haywards Heath, West Sussex
A rear extension design that took inspiration from the brick gable-fronted buildings in the surrounding context, re-appropriating the archetypal tectonic into a sculpted, contemporary facade.
The layout comprised a series of spaces withing an open plan expanse – each space would be distinguished not by walls/enclosures, but by the nature of the envelope around it.
The primary living area was defined by a 1.5-storey high volume, naturally-lit via a south-facing clerestory window above. The subservient kitchen was nestled in the darkest corner opposite, with the lowest ceiling height. A central dining space (part primary, part subservient) formed a spatial mediation between the two.
