River Neva Apartments

St. Petersburg, Russia

During his tenure at Studio Buschow, Marco carried out a layout feasibility study for two private apartments overlooking the River Neva in central St. Petersburg, involving a problematic lack of windows.

The solution was to conduct a ‘passive zone’ study where areas with the optimum light/views and potential for natural ventilation were highlighted in relation to existing structure, services and window positions – these zones would be allocated to the key lived-in areas, with other rooms treated so as to still benefit from ambient natural light.

Creating open plan living/dining/kitchen areas next to the main facade facing the river allowed light to permeate deep into the plan. Bathrooms were kept spacious and even unified with the bedroom where possible (with sliding doors to allow separation when required). Translucent screens were utilised where needed to admit further natural light into the enclosed rooms.
