Machiya House

Haringey, London

The inception of the project concept was derived from initial discussions with the client – she had fallen in love with the traditional Onsen from her visits to Japan, and the fledgling idea was to create an open-plan, relaxing bath space on the top floor, overlooking the surrounding nature in the adjacent park.

There was also a strong appreciation for the look of Crittall-style glazing, and the need for trellising on the extension exterior as support for climbing plants to ‘twine up’.

It made sense to develop a ‘hit and miss’ modular language on the exterior – a modern interpretation of traditional Machiya screens – which could act as trellising as well as align rhythmically with the Crittall window modules.

For congruity, this exterior language was continued onto the Master Suite dormer on the top floor, where a corner window was introduced to enable unobstructed views of the park from the bath and bed space.
